The Lanesborough

The Lanesborough is a grand 5-star hotel in Knightsbridge, standing beside Hyde Park Corner in central London. The building once housed St George’s Hospital, a neoclassical structure designed by William Wilkins and completed in the 19th century. Before its hospital days, the site belonged to the Viscounts Lanesborough, whose London home stood there in the 18th century. The hospital moved to Tooting in the 1970s, leaving the Hyde Park Corner building empty for a decade. A clause in its sale allowed the Duke of Westminster to reclaim it at the original price, which he did when the health service closed the hospital. The building later passed through several hotel operators before becoming The Lanesborough under Oetker Hotels. The hotel has earned a reputation for luxury and culinary excellence. In 2009, it introduced Apsleys restaurant with chef Heinz Beck, who had held three Michelin stars in Rome. The restaurant gained its first Michelin star within months, the fastest such achievement in London at the time. It was later renamed Céleste and retained its star until 2022 before becoming the Lanesborough Grill. The hotel itself was refurbished in the early 1990s and again in 2015 after a period of closure. It remains one of London’s most prestigious addresses. Inside, the hotel blends historic grandeur with modern comfort. The Lanesborough Grill offers fine dining in elegant surroundings, while other public rooms reflect the building’s neoclassical heritage. The location places guests close to Hyde Park Corner tube station and the edge of Hyde Park. The Grade II* listed building stands as a reminder of London’s layered history, from aristocratic townhouses to a major teaching hospital. Its transformation into a luxury hotel preserves both its architectural character and its place in the city’s story.
