The museum occupies the first floor, reached by a wide staircase with iron railings. Its entrance is marked by a simple sign on the ground floor. The building’s industrial past contrasts with the craft tools and textiles on display upstairs. The museum tells the story of the town from Saxon times to the wool trade of the Middle Ages. Exhibits include fragments of pottery and tools found in local fields. A reconstructed loom shows how wool was spun and woven in the 17th century. Documents describe how the market grew and how traders travelled from surrounding villages. One display traces the rise of the Co-operative Society itself in the 19th century. Another section explains how the wool trade shaped the town’s streets and buildings. Visitors find a quiet room filled with glass cases of buttons, coins and clay pipes. Photographs line the walls showing shops and schools from the 1800s. A case of handwritten wage books records payments to farm workers in the 1870s. Outside the windows, the High Street’s market stalls appear unchanged since the 19th century. The museum’s small size means exhibits can be viewed in under an hour. From the staircase, a view of the town’s rooftops opens up before descending back to the street.
