Hohenburg

The Hohenburg was a hilltop castle that once stood above the Körsch river in what is now Plieningen, a district of Stuttgart. First recorded in 1388, its builders were probably the local lords of Plieningen or the Bombast family from nearby Hohenheim. Little else is known about the fortress or its history. When the Paracelsus-Gymnasium was built, parts of its foundations were uncovered.

The remains that surfaced during construction show only the lowest walls of the old stronghold. No towers, gates or living quarters have been preserved. Archaeologists found traces of stonework and a few scattered artefacts, but no written records survive to explain how the castle was used. Its purpose remains a mystery.

Today the site lies within the school grounds, marked by a small information board. Visitors can stand where the walls once rose and look across the valley towards the modern buildings of Plieningen. The spot offers quiet views over the Körsch floodplain and the surrounding vineyards. It is a place where history is barely visible but still felt.
