Ashley Lane

Ashley Lane is a one-hectare nature site in Hendon, within the London Borough of Barnet. Once a medieval road, it dates back over 400 years and was used by Cardinal Wolsey in 1530 on his journey to York. Today it serves as a bridleway linking Hendon Golf Course to Hendon Cemetery. The lane follows the route of an old public road between Ashley Lane and Oakhampton Road. Ancient hedgerows line the path, forming narrow belts of woodland. Pedunculate oak and ash trees dominate, with wild service-trees scattered among them. The ground below the hedges is rich with ramsons and bluebells in season. A small stream, a tributary of Dollis Brook, crosses the lane, adding to its rural charm. Visitors walk along a quiet, tree-shaded path that feels far removed from the city. The woodland edges create a sheltered atmosphere, while the stream adds a gentle sound to the scene. The lane offers a peaceful green space where wildlife thrives and history lingers in every step.
