St. Markus Church

The small Romanesque church in Baumgarten an der March stands beside the village cemetery in the flat Marchfeld plain. Built in the late 13th century, it was lightly reshaped in 1733 when a Baroque porch and windows were added. The building is protected as a listed monument and belongs to the Diocese of Vienna. Inside, the four-bay nave has flat pilasters and a round-arched triumph arch. The narrow choir, raised one step, is vaulted in Baroque style and forms the ground floor of the massive west tower. A slender Baroque organ loft spans the rear of the nave. The tower itself rises in two storeys, its lower half of ashlar and upper half of rubble, with small sound openings and a later pointed spire. The high altar is a compact Baroque column piece from the late 17th century, topped by a painting of Saint Mark. Flanking it are simpler side altars, one showing the Pietà, the other the plague saints Sebastian, Roch and Rosalia. A Rococo Madonna in a carved frame and mid-19th-century Stations of the Cross complete the furnishings, together with a bell cast in 1649 by Georg Wiesenauer.
