Fotscherbach

The Fotscher Bach is a mountain river in the Austrian Alps. It rises high in the Stubai Alps at 2,200 metres above sea level. From there it flows north for 12.3 kilometres through steep valleys and alpine meadows. Near the village of Sellrain it joins the Melach from the right. The water is clean, rated A/B quality, and supports local wildlife. The river is recognised as a protected nature reserve by WWF Tirol. In 2016 the organisation designated the Fotscher Bach as a conservation area. Its steady flow also powers the Sellrain hydroelectric plant downstream. The valley shows how water shapes both landscape and energy use. Walkers often follow paths beside the clear stream. Visitors find quiet woodland and open meadows along the Fotscher Bach. The path follows the river’s gentle bends through Sellrain’s upland farms. Snowmelt keeps the water lively even in summer. Wildflowers line the banks in June and July. The reserve offers space to watch birds and listen to rushing water.
