Burg Schlossberg (Heggbach)

The Burg Schlossberg stands on a wooded hill 565 metres above sea level, about 2.6 kilometres north-north-east of Heggbach in Maselheim. The site once held a high medieval castle but now only a rectangular mound and its surrounding ditch remain. A low outer rampart still runs around part of the hilltop. No written records from the castle’s time have survived, and it never appears in any surviving charter. Historians know almost nothing about the castle’s history or who built it. Archaeologists have not dated any finds precisely, so its century of use is unknown. The lack of documents makes it difficult to trace who lived there or why it was abandoned. The site is therefore chiefly interesting for its earthworks rather than for any story it might tell. Visitors walk through mixed woodland to reach the quiet clearing where the mound rises. The ditch and rampart are easiest to see on the northern and eastern sides. From the top there are long views over the surrounding farmland and the valley of the river Riß. The absence of modern intrusions keeps the atmosphere of an old frontier stronghold.
