Brian Friel Theatre

The Brian Friel Theatre is a small studio theatre on the campus of Queen’s University Belfast. It sits in University Square, sharing a building with the Queen’s Film Theatre. The theatre opened in February 2009 and was named after the Irish playwright Brian Friel. It belongs to the university’s School of Languages, Literature and Performing Arts. The Brian Friel Centre for Theatre Research is also based there. The theatre supports student drama teaching and provides space for rehearsals and performances. It regularly hosts student productions alongside professional shows. Each year it features events such as the Belfast International Arts Festival. The space is used for both teaching and public performances. Inside, the theatre has a simple studio layout designed for flexible staging. The main space can be rearranged to suit different kinds of performances. Outside, University Square offers a quiet spot on the campus. The theatre’s location makes it easy to reach from other university buildings.
