Burg Erolzheim
Burg Erolzheim stands on a spur above the Iller valley in Oberschwaben. The remains lie 629 metres south-west of Erolzheim Castle, near the village of Erolzheim in Landkreis Biberach. Only fragments of ditches and ramparts survive today. A small hilltop chapel now occupies the site. The Bergkapelle serves as a place of pilgrimage, hermitage and burial place for the von Bernhard family. The spur once guarded the Iller, which formed part of the late Roman Danube–Iller–Rhine frontier. From the third century AD this limes system defended the empire after the Upper German–Raetian limes was abandoned. The Burg Erolzheim hilltop offered a clear view over the river valley and surrounding countryside. Visitors find a quiet hilltop clearing with low earthworks marking the old walls. The Bergkapelle’s white walls and red roof stand among mature lime and chestnut trees. Inside, a simple altar and memorial plaques recall the von Bernhard family. The valley below stretches away toward the Alps on clear days. A short path leads from the village up to the chapel and the old ramparts.
