Montforthaus Feldkirch

The Montforthaus Feldkirch stands in the medieval old town of Feldkirch, Vorarlberg. It is a modern cultural centre designed by Hascher Jehle Architektur of Berlin and Mitiska Wäger Architekten of Bludenz. The building replaces an earlier hall destroyed by fire in 1973 and opened in its present form in 2015. Its exterior uses Jura marble, echoing local tradition while the form remains contemporary. The site has been a cultural venue since the 1926 Volkshalle built by Lois Welzenbacher. The building contains a large hall seating between 1,100 and 3,000 people, a smaller hall for up to 270, and four seminar rooms. A restaurant and roof deck provide 60 extra seats, with an additional event room for 150. The foyer links these spaces flexibly for different events. Acoustic planning by Graner + Partner and lighting by LDE support performances and gatherings. An underground car park holds 138 cars and 30 bicycles. Visitors enter a 15-metre-high lounge covering 1,800 square metres, with 1,200 square metres of glass and windows. The total floor area reaches 12,700 square metres. Awards recognise its architecture and sustainability, including the Austrian national prize for architecture and sustainability in 2017. The Montforthaus integrates with the old town while offering modern facilities for concerts, theatre, trade fairs and conventions.
