Institut für moderne Kunst Nürnberg

The Institut für moderne Kunst Nürnberg stands in the city of Nürnberg in Mittelfranken. It opened in 1967 as a centre for information and documentation on contemporary art in Germany. Its main task is to maintain an archive of German and international art from the present day. The institute also produces exhibitions and publications to share its collections with the public. The archive holds about 550 000 items, including 15 000 dossiers on artists and 46 000 photographs. There are also 70 000 books, 210 000 printed items and 220 000 press cuttings. The library is certified to professional standards and exchanges material with around 500 institutions worldwide. Anna Wondrak became director in 2026 after working at the institute for many years. Visitors can consult the reference library inside the building of the Neues Museum – Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design. The institute also organises exhibitions in local venues such as the Kunst- und Kulturhaus zumikon. Recent projects have explored themes in post-war art and featured works by living artists.
