Lurg Mhòr

Lurg Mhòr is a remote Munro standing 986 metres high in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. It sits at the centre of an east–west ridge that includes Meall Mòr and Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich. The mountain overlooks Loch Monar to the east and the strath of Bearneas and Attadale Forest to the west. Glen Carron lies to the north while Glen Shiel borders the south. Its long, flat east ridge leads down to Loch Monar at Pait Lodge. The approach to Lurg Mhòr is long and tough, with routes from the north, east or west. Cameron McNeish calls it one of the loneliest Munros. The eastern route follows Loch Monar from Struy through Glen Strathfarrar, a journey Dan Bailey describes as an epic trip. From Achnashellach in Glen Carron the shortest walk starts with a wade across the River Carron. Bothies such as Bearnais and Maol Bhuidhe offer stopovers for those on two-day expeditions. On the north side of the west ridge a quartzite crag provides several rock-climbing routes, two graded very severe. The southern slope is gentler and grassy, while the northern cliffs are steep. The ridge narrows in places and some scrambling is needed between Lurg Mhòr and Meall Mòr. The Attadale Estate owns the land, where the bedrock belongs to the Glenfinnan Group of the Loch Ness Supergroup.
