Càrn Dearg

Càrn Dearg rises above Glen Roy in the Highland region, a solitary peak in the Grampian Mountains. It stands near the southern end of Loch Oich to the north-west, while the Corrieyairack pass lies to the north-east. The mountain overlooks Glen Roy to the south and the northern tip of Loch Lochy to the west. Two other summits share the name: one lies just north-north-west across a small col, and another, Càrn Dearg Beag, sits to the south-east. The mountain is known for its clear views over Glen Roy and the surrounding glens. On calm days the loch surfaces mirror the hills, adding to the scene. Walkers often climb Càrn Dearg for the wide outlook over the Great Glen and the distant peaks of the Nevis range. The route from Kilfinnan follows the old military road, passing through heather moorland before reaching the final slopes. At the top a simple cairn marks the summit, offering space to rest and take in the panorama. The view stretches north to the Monadhliath Mountains and south to Ben Nevis on clear days. The contrast between the dark peat of the moors and the pale quartzite of the summit rocks catches the light at dusk. The silence is broken only by the wind and the occasional call of a raven circling above.
