Schloss Glapfenberg

Schloss Glapfenberg stands in the hamlet of Glapfenberg, part of Regenstauf in eastern Bavaria. The building is a protected monument, listed under two separate entries in the Bavarian heritage register. One record covers the structure itself, while another marks the site as an archaeological find from the Middle Ages and early modern period. The castle began as a medieval fortification first mentioned in 1551. In 1698 a new residence replaced the old one, giving the present house its 17th-century appearance. Over the centuries the estate passed through the hands of several noble families, including the Horneck, the Teuffl von Pirkensee and the Counts of Drechsel. The present building is a two-storey rectangle with a steep pitched roof and stepped gables. Its stone walls rest on a raised ground floor, a feature typical of fortified houses in the region. The Horneck family owned the site when it was first recorded, and later owners added their own marks to the fabric. The Counts of Drechsel held the property in the early 19th century before it passed into private hands. Today the castle remains in private ownership and is not open to the public. Visitors approach along a quiet lane that climbs gently to the raised forecourt. The main block presents a plain but solid façade, its gables rising sharply above the roofline. The stepped gables give the building a distinctive silhouette against the surrounding farmland. Inside, the original layout survives largely intact, with rooms arranged on both floors around a central corridor. The setting is rural, surrounded by meadows and woodland typical of the Bavarian Forest fringe.
