Teatr dach Meerdorf

Theatr dach Meerdorf is a small arts theatre in Meerdorf, a village in the Wendeburg district of Lower Saxony. It occupies the converted hayloft of a more than a century-old timber-framed farmhouse. The building still shows its rural origins in the museum-style barn floor and the reused fixtures such as old church pews and doors. The theatre is known for its unconventional name and programme. Founded in 1990 by theatre educator and director Albrecht Schultze, it began life on his own attic rehearsal space. Today it hosts regular performances of cabaret, music, dance theatre, children’s theatre and readings, drawing artists from across Germany and Europe. In 2016 Schultze received the Federal Cross of Merit for his cultural and educational work. Visitors enter through the barn and climb stairs to the attic theatre. The room seats sixty on simple benches and chairs around a twelve-square-metre stage. Behind the building lies a large garden where summer open-air events take place, including themed evenings such as ‘Internationes’ that celebrate a different country with food, plays and live music.
