Groß Borstel
Groß Borstel lies in the north of Hamburg, between the Eppendorf quarter and Hamburg Airport. A small stream called the Tarpenbek crosses the area and feeds into the River Alster. To the east is the Eppendorfer Moor, a wetland that adds quiet green space. The quarter borders several other Hamburg districts, making it easy to reach by road or public transport. Klein Borstel, an unofficial neighbourhood, sits just north of Groß Borstel. The name comes from an old word meaning ‘house place’, first written down in the 11th century. The quarter’s history appears in old maps under spellings like Burstolde and Calebostel. In the early 18th century a house called Frustberg was built, now known as Stavenhagenhaus. Groß Borstel became part of Hamburg in 1913 after decades as a separate village. A recent event in March 2023 overshadowed the area when a shooting occurred at a Jehovah’s Witnesses centre. Despite this, the quarter remains a calm residential part of the city. Visitors find tree-lined streets and modest houses typical of northern Hamburg. The Tarpenbek stream runs through small parks and under footbridges, offering short walks. Eppendorfer Moor is a peaceful wetland with paths for gentle strolls. Stavenhagenhaus, the old manor, still stands as a reminder of the quarter’s past. Local cafés and shops line the main roads, giving a sense of everyday Hamburg life. From here it is simple to reach the airport or continue into central Hamburg.
