Burg Helmsheim

The Burg Helmsheim once stood on the Schlossbuckel hill, 800 metres west of Helmsheim village near Bruchsal. Built by the Helmsheim lords, it first appears in records from 1207. Around 1483 the fortress was destroyed, and in 1870 its ruins were levelled. Today only a few dressed stones survive, built into the local cemetery wall. The site marks one of the Kraichgau region’s medieval power centres. Local historian Hartmut Riehl describes it among the area’s castles in his book on the Kraichgau. Though the castle itself has vanished, its name lives on in the landscape and the village. Visitors walk up to the Schlossbuckel and find a quiet hilltop with wide views over the surrounding countryside. The cemetery wall holds the reused quader stones, the only visible trace of the vanished fortress. A simple stone cross stands nearby, marking the spot where the keep once rose.
