Franz Werfel monument

The Franz Werfel monument stands in Schiller Park in central Vienna. It honours an Austrian writer who championed the Armenian cause. The granite pedestal bears the words ‘In gratitude to the Armenian people’. The monument was raised in 1998 by the Austrian Armenian community. A khachkar brought from Armenia was added nearby in 2001. The square beside Saint Hripsime Church was then renamed Armenian Square. The sculptor is Vladimir Petrosyan and the architect Roland Martirosyan. Visitors find the statue set against the quiet greenery of Schiller Park. A khachkar and granite pedestal mark the spot. The inscription reminds passers-by of the writer’s bond with Armenia.
