Gustav-Schwab-Museum
The Gustav-Schwab-Museum stands in Schloss Gomaringen, a former parsonage turned cultural centre in the small town of Gomaringen. The building served as Gustav Schwab’s home and workplace when he was parish priest there from 1837 to 1841. It was here that he wrote his Schiller biography and the famous Sagen des klassischen Altertums between 1838 and 1840. Visiting writers included Ludwig Uhland, Justinus Kerner and Nikolaus Lenau, who praised the local Spätzle and Schwab’s Swabian dialect. The museum occupies two rooms on the upper floor, once Schwab’s own apartment. Photographs, manuscripts and first editions recall his years in Gomaringen. Special attention is given to his research on the Swabian Alb, carried out with the help of Marbach’s literary museums team. Since 1998 the building has housed not only the literature museum but also the local adult education college and a music school. Schloss Gomaringen itself is an elegant structure with a quiet courtyard. Visitors walk through rooms where Schwab worked and entertained guests. The displays show how a 19th-century writer lived and wrote, set against the backdrop of a small Swabian town.
