Schloss Rohr

Schloss Rohr stands in the Steiermark region near the village of Ragnitz. In the 12th century it began as a water fortress, surrounded by water-filled moats. The Stift Rein monastery bought it in 1630 and turned it into a retreat for its abbot. During the 17th and 18th centuries the medieval stronghold was enlarged and remodelled into the building seen today. After the monastery sold the property in 1953, private owners have cared for it ever since. The castle is now in poor condition, with parts at risk of collapse. The Denkmal Steiermark association campaigns to stabilise and preserve what remains. Original features such as the moats, towers and Baroque façades survive despite the neglect. Visitors can still walk around the outer grounds and view the exterior architecture. Inside, sections are roped off for safety, yet the scale and layout of the former residence are clear. Outside, the surrounding parkland stretches out from the moat-lined walls. The main courtyard shows the castle’s former grandeur. Ivy clings to crumbling stonework, and the roofs show signs of long-term disrepair. The setting remains peaceful, with distant views over the gently rolling countryside of southern Steiermark.
