Justus-Liebig-Denkmal

The Justus-Liebig-Denkmal stands in Darmstadt’s Luisenplatz, a public square in the heart of the city. It was raised in 1913 and carved from local stone by the sculptor Heinrich Jobst. A tall pedestal supports a female figure representing the ideal of science, her right hand holding a sphere that once bore a small eight-breasted goddess, restored in 1992. On the front of the pedestal a bronze relief shows the chemist Justus von Liebig, born in Darmstadt. Two side panels display scenes from his scientific career. The monument is recognised as a Hessian cultural landmark and commemorates one of the 19th century’s most influential chemists. Liebig’s discoveries transformed agricultural fertiliser and food chemistry, earning him lasting fame. The bronze reliefs capture key moments from his laboratory work and teaching. The eight-breasted figure on the sphere recalls ancient symbols of abundance and nourishment, linking Liebig’s research to fertility and growth. Visitors can walk around the square and view the reliefs from all sides. The Luisenplatz itself is a spacious square lined with lime trees and surrounded by modern buildings. The Mercksche Engel-Apotheke, where the monument once stood directly in front, still faces the pedestal today. The square’s paved surface and benches invite a pause to study the reliefs and the flowing lines of the sculpture. From the square, visitors can continue into Darmstadt’s pedestrian streets and parks.
