Färberturm

The Färberturm stands in Schwaben, on the grounds of the former Augsburger Kammgarn-Spinnerei. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used by the bleachers’ and dyers’ guild to hang and dry dyed cloth. The tower is one of the few surviving witnesses to Augsburg’s flourishing textile trade.
Its design is simple and functional. A solid stone base supports a wooden upper section rising up to twelve metres. At the top, a continuous frame of poles holds wet fabric while it dries. A tiled hipped roof shelters the structure from rain and wind.
Visitors see the tower’s rectangular footprint and the contrast between stone and timber. The open frame at the top remains clearly visible. The surrounding industrial site, now repurposed, frames the historic building against modern changes.
