Saffron Walden Museum

Saffron Walden Museum stands on Museum Street in the Essex town of Saffron Walden. It occupies a purpose-built brick building set in a grassy enclosure beside the ruins of Walden Castle, a 12th-century earthwork keep. The museum was founded in 1835 by the local Natural History Society and opened three years after the society itself. Its founders included Jabez Gibson and Lord Braybrooke of Audley End, who leased the land and helped assemble the first collections. The building was designed to house natural history, antiquities and local curiosities, a role it still fulfils today. The museum’s collections number about 175,000 items covering archaeology, world cultures, geology and social history. Among its best-known exhibits are Wallace the Lion, a Roman mummy and an Egyptian painted coffin. There is also a rare late Tudor bed, a glove linked to Mary, Queen of Scots, and an 18th-century suit of Japanese samurai armour. The museum’s natural history displays include a mounted African elephant purchased in 1837 and a hippopotamus acquired at the same time. Significant ethnographic material came from early 19th-century collectors such as George Bennet and John Helder Wedge. Visitors find a single-storey museum arranged around a Great Hall that once served as an agricultural meeting room. The main galleries display the world cultures collection, local history and natural history in chronological and thematic cases. The Egyptian and Roman galleries hold mummies, coffins and pottery, while the costume gallery shows textiles and accessories. Outside, the grassy enclosure offers a quiet space beside the castle ruins, and the building’s simple brick façade reflects its 19th-century origins. The museum is run by the district council in partnership with a local charitable society and supported by more than fifty volunteers.
