Cultural heritage D-3-6441-0018 in Schönsee

Schloss Dietersberg stands in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria, nine hundred metres south-west of Dietersberg, a village within the town of Schönsee. It was once a hammer mill, a type of ironworks powered by the Ascha river. The site includes traces of earlier buildings and an iron hammer that operated from the late Middle Ages into the early modern period. The main building is a two-storey structure with a pitched roof and stepped gables, topped by a small clock tower. The estate’s history reflects the region’s iron industry and noble landholding. Records show the Dietersberg hammer processing over two thousand tonnes of ore between 1603 and 1608. The Pleyer family owned the works in the early 17th century, later converting it to a glass-polishing mill in 1754. For nearly a century and a half the Maduschka family ran the site, installing an electricity plant in 1907 that supplied nearby villages until after the Second World War. Visitors find the former hammer-herrenhaus with its dressed corner stones and ovolo-moulded window frames. A small chapel from the 18th century stands at the western gateway, its semicircular apse and cross-vaulted interior adding quiet character. The surrounding landscape, shaped by the river and centuries of industry, offers a glimpse of how iron and glass works once shaped this corner of Bavaria.
