Österreichisches Post- und Telgraphenmuseum
The Austrian Post and Telegraph Museum stands in Eisenerz, a town in the northern Steiermark region. It occupies the historic Kammerhof, once a hunting lodge built for Emperor Franz Joseph I. The building itself reflects the imperial past of the area. Inside, visitors find exhibits tracing the evolution of postal services and telegraphy from the early 19th century to the end of the First World War. A fully roadworthy post carriage can be entered, and a preserved imperial post office from around 1900 shows how mail was handled then. Original documents, writing tools and early communication devices like Morse keys and telephone sets are on display. A children’s post office explains how people sent messages before telephones or the internet existed. The museum occupies the Kammerhof’s rooms, which add to the experience of stepping back in time. Visitors walk through spaces once used by the imperial court, making the visit both educational and atmospheric. The exhibits bring to life the technical and social changes that shaped modern communication.
