Schloss Batthyany

Schloss Batthyány stands in Neumarkt an der Raab, a village in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. Built in the mid-19th century, it served as the seat of the Batthyány family, one of Hungary’s oldest noble houses. The estate remains in family hands and is protected as a historic monument. The house reflects the family’s rise from local landowners to major regional landholders after the 1848 revolution. Franz VI. Batthyány expanded the original building in 1846 and added an octagonal wing in 1866. Later owners included his widow Caroline and their children, several of whom were born or died here. Visitors approach along a broad stone staircase flanked by lantern-topped pillars. The three-storey main block has a symmetrical façade crowned by a gable and a balcony with wrought-iron railings. Inside the park, stone statues of nuns stand among lawns and mature trees designed in the English style.
