St John's Church, Lytham

St John’s Church stands on East Beach in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, beside the Irish Sea. Built in the 19th century, it is an active Anglican parish church designed in Early English style. The sandstone walls and slate roofs rise beside a broad churchyard, with a tall broach spire marking the skyline. A four-stage tower with lancet windows and lucarnes dominates the exterior. The Clifton family gave the site, and public subscription paid for the building. Consecrated in 1850, it began as a mission church before becoming a parish in 1870. The church is recognised as a Grade II* listed building of special interest. Its architect, E. H. Shellard, created one of his finest works here, according to English Heritage. The interior features six-bay arcades on short cylindrical piers and box pews without doors. A war memorial chapel contains a stone arcade designed by Cartmell and carved by J. Stother. Stained glass by Geoffrey Webb and B. D. Walmsley fills the windows, and a ring of six bells cast in 1875 hangs in the tower. The two-manual pipe organ has been maintained by firms including Conacher and Hele. Visitors enter through the south door beneath the lych gate, a timber-framed structure with fishscale slates and terracotta ridge tiles. The churchyard wall, about one metre high, is decorated with pebble panels set in sandstone. Inside, the chancel’s three stepped lancets and the transepts’ narrow lancets with circular windows draw the eye upward. The clerestory’s small triple lancets and the west wall’s tall lancets add to the light and symmetry. The war memorial chapel’s screen by Ernest Flower stands as a quiet focus within the space.
