Gawthorpe Hall

Gawthorpe Hall stands beside the River Calder in Ightenhill, Lancashire, an Elizabethan mansion built in the early 1600s around an older pele tower. The house was planned by Richard Shuttleworth but completed after his death by his brother Lawrence, with stone from imported Irish timber. In the 19th century Charles Barry rebuilt much of the hall for Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, architect of the Houses of Parliament. The estate spreads into Padiham, where a 1602–04 Great Barn survives as a Grade I listed building. A formal garden once overlooked the river, now reduced to traces visible in dry summers. The hall’s interiors carry the initials KS and mottoes recalling the Shuttleworths and the Kay-Shuttleworths. Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth lived here from 1953 until 1967, filling the house with a textile collection she began in 1912. The collection remains at Gawthorpe, cared for by a separate charity trust. The hall became a Grade I listed building in 1953 and passed to the National Trust in 1970 under a 99-year lease with Lancashire County Council. In 2015 the council provided £500,000 for urgent repairs to the south and west fronts. Visitors walk through rooms where 17th-century household books record purchases of spices from London and glass for rose water. The main dining room shows plaster roundels and the front door bears the family’s initials. Outside, the river was diverted twice, once for pollution and again for coal mining, leaving the terrace garden’s outline still visible. The hall is the start of the Brontë Way, a 69-kilometre footpath across the South Pennines. Nearby, Burnley Football Club’s training ground occupies land once part of the estate.
