Burgstall Altgabelstein

Burgstall Altgabelstein stands on a wooded hill 10 metres above the Michelbach stream, east of Michelbach am Wald village in the Öhringen municipality. The site sits at 330 metres above sea level in the Alten Bürg forest section of Hohenlohekreis. It overlooks the narrow valley carved by the Michelbach, a small tributary of the Ohrn. The hilltop once held a small medieval fortification now reduced to faint earthworks. No written records survive about its builders or owners, leaving its origins uncertain. The remains suggest the fort guarded the Michelbach valley or perhaps served as an early version of nearby Burg Gabelstein. Archaeologists found a piece of wattle-and-daub infill, a ‘Fache’, which points to a half-timbered building destroyed by fire. The defences relied on steep natural slopes and man-made ditches fed by diverted streams. These water channels cut off three sides of the hill, making the approach difficult. The fourth side drops sharply toward the Michelbach itself. Visitors today walk a quiet forest path to the hilltop clearing. A low rise marks where a ring wall once stood beside the stream. The site is quiet except for birdsong and the murmur of the Michelbach below. Interpretive signs explain the earthworks and the fire that ended the wooden buildings. The surrounding beech and oak woods frame views across the valley toward distant farmland. The place rewards those curious about vanished medieval life rather than grand ruins.
