A medieval site in the Upper Palatinate stands where the village of Weidenthal once grew beside the Murach valley. The remains lie beneath today’s fields and gardens in Guteneck, a quiet municipality in the Schwandorf district. A vanished church dedicated to Saint Willibald once crowned the knoll, and beside it stood a small castle whose owners changed hands through the centuries. The Weidenthalers, an ancient noble family, held the place from 1147 until the late 13th century. Later owners included the Murachers, who ruled Guteneck for three hundred years until 1574, and the Kreith family who took over in 1593. A trade route once passed through the village, linking Amberg to the Bohemian border, and the church’s status shifted from Lutheran to Catholic in the late 17th century. Visitors walk over grassy mounds where walls once rose. The gentle rise still shows the outline of the churchyard, and ploughing occasionally turns up worked stones. The Murach valley’s soft light falls across the fields, and the quiet of the countryside returns the mind to the days when knights and monks lived here.
