Stappitzer See

Stappitzer See is an Alpine lake in the Hohe Tauern range near Mallnitz in Carinthia. It sits in the peripheral zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park, surrounded by steep slopes and dense forests. The lake formed during the last glacial period when glaciers retreated and a landslide dammed the valley. Over thousands of years, sedimentation shaped the lake as it appears today. Several debris cones confine its waters, making it a relict from the ice age. The landscape around the lake remains largely untouched by modern development. The lake is recognised as an important resting area for many bird species. Visitors may spot the black-throated loon and the western yellow wagtail during migrations. It also serves as a breeding ground for the little grebe, the Alpine swift, and the Eurasian crag martin. In 1986, the lake was declared a nature reserve to protect its fragile ecosystem. Since 2008, it has held the status of a Special Protection Area under the European Birds Directive. Plans for a reservoir power station in the 1970s were abandoned due to environmental concerns and local opposition. A visit to Stappitzer See offers peaceful walks along its shores and views of the surrounding mountains. The clear waters reflect the rugged peaks of the Hohe Tauern range. The dense forests and alpine meadows provide habitats for a variety of wildlife. The lake’s quiet atmosphere makes it ideal for birdwatching and nature observation. The absence of large crowds allows visitors to experience the landscape undisturbed. The area remains a testament to the region’s glacial past and its enduring natural beauty.
