New College

New College stands on The Mound in Edinburgh’s Old Town, a neo-Gothic building designed by William Henry Playfair in the 19th century. It overlooks Princes Street Gardens and the Scottish National Gallery, linking academic life with the city’s heart. The complex includes the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, where the annual General Assembly meets and where the Scottish Parliament sat temporarily in the late 1990s. The Free High Kirk’s former sanctuary now houses the New College Library, the largest single-site theological library in the UK. Rainy Hall, with its hammerbeam roof and heraldic decorations, serves as the dining and social hub for students and faculty. The college began in 1843 as the Free Church College after the Disruption, when clergy left the established Church of Scotland. Thomas Chalmers, its first principal, guided its early development and oversaw the construction of the current building. In 1935 it became part of the University of Edinburgh as the School of Divinity, though it retains ties with the Church of Scotland. Today it trains nearly 300 undergraduates and postgraduates from over 30 countries, taught by almost 40 academic staff. The School of Divinity was ranked 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK for theological research in 2021. Visitors find a working academic environment with a strong sense of history. The library holds manuscripts and papers of notable figures such as Thomas Chalmers and James S. Stewart. The General Assembly Hall, still used for church business, echoes with the debates that shaped Scottish religious and political life. Rainy Hall remains a focal point for daily college life. The building’s Gothic Revival style and central location make it a visible landmark in Edinburgh’s skyline.
