South Quay DLR station

South Quay station sits on the Isle of Dogs in east London, beside the South Dock of the West India Docks. It is part of the Docklands Light Railway network and lies between Crossharbour and Heron Quays stations. The platforms straddle the channel that links Millwall Dock to the West India Docks. The station serves London fare zone 2 and is surrounded by modern offices and new homes. A footbridge connects it to the private Canary Wharf estate across the water. The station’s history includes a 1996 bombing near the site that killed two people and injured more than thirty. A memorial plaque at the station was unveiled in December 2009 to honour the victims. In 2004 Transport for London decided to move the station because its sharp curves limited train lengths. The new station opened in October 2009 on a straight stretch of track 125 metres to the east. Services run every few minutes to Bank and Lewisham, with extra trains at peak times. Visitors find a small shopping centre called South Quay Plaza across the road. The Pan Peninsula Towers rise nearby, and the Hilton London Canary Wharf hotel is a short walk away. Along the dock’s southern shore, restaurants line the waterfront. The South Quay Footbridge offers a quick route to Canary Wharf’s landscaped estate.
