Pfarrkirche hl. Stephan, Wilhelmsburg

The Roman Catholic parish church of Wilhelmsburg stands on the northern side of the main square in this small town in Lower Austria. A church has occupied the site since the 11th century, when it became one of the earliest parishes in the region. After a fire in the 15th century the building was rebuilt in Gothic style, though parts of the original Romanesque core remain. The church has been protected as a listed monument for many decades. The church’s exterior shows a broad, low west front under a single roof that covers nave and aisles. The west gable rises above a tower whose upper section alone is visible, topped by a small dome and a ducal crown. Two Baroque porches, one on the north and one on the south, frame doorways richly decorated with statues and curved gables. Inside, the three-aisled nave has ribbed vaults with carved bosses, and the main choir ends in a five-sided apse. The high altar is a tall stone retable framed in black marble, its central panel painted with the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. The side chapels contain medieval glass showing figures from the 14th century and later windows depicting saints. The walls hold gravestones from the 17th and 18th centuries, including memorials to local families and clergy. The organ case dates from 1973, and the church bells were recast in the 1950s after the last war.
