Schwedenschanze

The Schwedenschanze stands on the Amtshausberg, a spur of the Ebenöde ridge, 500 metres north-west of Vlotho castle in the town of Vlotho. The site is a complex of earthworks and ditches preserved as a protected archaeological monument. Two linked earthworks form the remains: a smaller southern enclosure and a larger northern platform. Its purpose and age are still debated. Some suggest it was built in the Thirty Years’ War or the Seven Years’ War. Others think it defended the castle from the north-west. The name ‘Swedish Schanze’ is a folk label, not proof of Swedish builders. No excavation has yet clarified its origins. Visitors see clear ramparts and ditches marking both enclosures. The southern part has a small plateau surrounded by a double ditch and earth bank. The northern part shows a stepped platform guarded by a ditch and outer wall on three sides. A steep natural slope on the west side made extra defences unnecessary.
