Normansfield Theatre

The Normansfield Theatre is a Victorian building in Teddington, south-west London. It stands on the site of the former Normansfield Hospital, a self-sufficient Victorian complex run by Dr John Langdon Down. The hospital is where he carried out the early research that identified the condition now known as Down syndrome. The theatre itself was built in 1877 and finished in 1879 for use by patients. It is now looked after by the Langdon Down Centre Trust. The theatre regularly hosts productions by amateur groups such as Richmond Opera. The Grade II* listed building has also been used as a filming location. It appeared in several Agatha Christie’s Poirot episodes, the 2009 film Dorian Gray, Downton Abbey and Bridgerton. Visitors find a restored Victorian playhouse with ornate plasterwork and original fittings. The surrounding area includes social housing converted from former workshops. The theatre’s interior still reflects its original purpose for patient performances and entertainments.
