Burgstall Heubelsburg
The Heubelsburg is a ruined lowland castle near the hamlet of Heubelsburg in Schwaben. It once stood on flat ground, surrounded by meadows and farmland. The castle may have been built as a motte, a raised earthwork topped by a wooden or stone tower. Records name the Ellerbach family as its owners in the Middle Ages. Today only the earthen mound remains, protected as an archaeological site. Historians still debate when the castle was first raised. No documents survive to give an exact date. The Ellerbachs were powerful local lords in the 12th and 13th centuries. Their castle would have controlled routes across the region. Over centuries the wooden buildings vanished, leaving only the grassy mound. Visitors walk across the quiet fields to reach the mound. A low fence marks the protected area around the tower site. From the top there are wide views over the surrounding farmland. The place is peaceful, with no modern buildings in sight. It invites a short stop to imagine the castle that once stood there.
