Hundsheimer Berge

The Hundsheimer Berge rise near the Devín Gate where the Danube bends. This low mountain range covers about 36 square kilometres and forms the southern end of the Devín Carpathians. It is bordered by the Danube on the north and east and by the Vienna basin on the south and west. The highest point is Hundsheimer Berg at 481 metres, though the hills start only 140 metres above sea level along the river. Dense beech forests cover much of the range, giving way on the southern slopes to vineyards and farmland. The area is known for its wine-making tradition and the ruins of Pottenburg Castle. Several peaks offer viewpoints across the surrounding landscape. The southern slopes are lined with vineyards, and south of Edelstal wine cellars provide tastings. The highest summits include Weisses Kreuz at 363 metres and Braunsberg at 346 metres. Lower but still prominent are Königswarte, Pfaffenberg and Teichberg, each offering open views. Paths wind through the beech woods and along the vineyard terraces. The ruins of Pottenburg Castle stand on one of the ridges, with stone walls marking where the old fortress once stood. From the summits walkers can see the Danube valley and the plains beyond. At the lower slopes the vineyards give way to farmland and scattered wine cellars. The contrast between forest, farm and river creates a varied landscape for short walks.
