Spitalkirche

The Spitalkirche Heilig Geist is a protected medieval church in Bad Windsheim, linked to the Franconian Open-Air Museum. Built between 1416 and 1421 from solid stone blocks, it features a tall square tower added in 1728. The tower’s upper section holds the clock and bells under a steep slate-covered spire. Inside, the nave has a flat ceiling richly decorated with stucco, while the choir is roofed with a ribbed vault. The church now serves as the first Lutheran church museum in Bavaria, displaying exhibits on Protestant history and shared Christian traditions. Regular special exhibitions explore how different faiths have coexisted in the region. Visitors walk through the nave and choir, admiring the historic plasterwork and vaulting. The building stands within the museum’s ‘town group’, surrounded by other period structures. Displays include artefacts, documents and changing exhibitions that trace the evolution of faith and community life in Franconia.
