Vienna Party School

The Vienna Party School was an institution created by the Social Democratic Party of Austria. It opened in 1924 in the city of Vienna. The school had two levels: a lower school for shop stewards and a middle school for political education. Franz Rauscher led the school from 1927 until it was shut down in 1934. The Austrofascists suppressed the school and imprisoned Rauscher for his role. Between 1927 and 1934, the middle school trained between sixty and a hundred graduates each year. This school matters because it shows how the Social Democratic Party organised workers’ education in the 1920s and early 1930s. Franz Rauscher’s leadership shaped the school’s programmes and its role in the labour movement. The school’s suppression under Austrofascism marks a turning point in Austrian political history. Its graduates went on to lead unions and local party branches across Vienna. The institution’s brief existence left a lasting influence on workers’ education in Austria. Visitors today can still see the building where the school once operated. The rooms where classes and meetings took place remain recognisable.
