Saint Nicholas Church

The parish church of St Nicholas stands on a small hill in the centre of Schwarzau im Gebirge, a village in the foothills of the Alps in Lower Austria. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the region and has been protected as a historic monument for decades. The church’s history is closely linked to the nearby Gutenstein estate, which held the parish rights until the late 16th century. The building combines Romanesque and Baroque styles. Its late Romanesque core is still visible, while the western tower was added in the early 18th century with a distinctive onion dome. Inside, the church preserves an 18th-century high altar and a classical organ built in 1838. A fragment of a medieval wall painting of St Christopher, uncovered in 1982, hints at the church’s early decoration. Outside, the church is surrounded by a walled cemetery with simple iron gates. The walls themselves date back to the Middle Ages and frame views of the surrounding mountains. The quiet square below the hill offers a place to pause before climbing the steps to the churchyard.
