Schloss Leiben

Schloss Leiben stands in the village of Leiben in Lower Austria, where it has overlooked the landscape since the 12th century. Built around 1113 by the knights who gave the place its name, the castle passed through several noble hands before reaching its present form under Hans Christian Geyer von Osterburg in the early 17th century. The main building rises four storeys with irregular wings and corner towers, enclosing a five-sided arcaded courtyard that holds an old clock tower. Inside, the prayer room and knights’ hall still carry richly painted 17th-century coffered ceilings by an unknown artist, showing mythological scenes and devotional images. After 1796 the Habsburg family took possession, using the estate to support relatives until the First World War. The castle’s later life began in 1989 when the local council bought it from the federal forests. After careful restoration it now hosts regular cultural events while also sheltering a specialist museum. The Landtechnikmuseum occupies four floors of the granary wing and the vaulted cellar, displaying farm tractors from 1910 onwards along with engines, models and a full collection of historic weighing machines. The displays trace the technical progress of agriculture and include a wide range of restored implements. Since 1994 the exhibition has borne the name Landtechnik-Museum, and since 2019 it has been known as the Österreichisches Landwirtschaftsmuseum Europaschloss Leiben. Visitors walk through the arcaded courtyard past the clock tower into rooms where the painted ceilings catch the light. The granary tract now leads past tractors and ploughs arranged by decade, while the cellar holds rows of old scales and measuring devices. Outside, the irregular silhouette of the castle and its towers frames views over the surrounding countryside. The village itself lies a short distance away, offering a quiet place to finish the visit.
