Schloss Creglingen

Schloss Creglingen stands beside the Tauber river in the small town of Creglingen in Baden-Württemberg. It began in about 1100 as a simple stone watch-tower for the local lords. In the 14th century the Hohenlohe-Brauneck family added a larger courtyard and walls. After the family died out in 1390, the whole estate passed to Ansbach principality and later became a ducal office. The present building is a late-medieval solid structure enlarged in 1544. Around 1600 the Renaissance wings were added for the margraves’ upper administration. A major refurbishment in 1734 gave the palace its current look. Traces of the original watch-tower still show in the cellars and outer walls. Today the Evangelical parish office occupies the building. The courtyard is open to visitors, and the outer walls still carry the marks of the 14th-century curtain. From the riverbank a low path leads past the moat to the main gate, offering a quiet view of the Tauber valley and the old stone bridge.
