Herzog-Adolph-Denkmal in Königstein im Taunus

The Herzog-Adolph-Denkmal stands in Königstein im Taunus, a town in the Taunus hills west of Frankfurt. It is a bronze statue of Duke Adolph of Nassau, who later became Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The monument was created by sculptor Gustav Eberlein and cast by H. Gladenbeck in Berlin. The site was once a bleaching ground, redesigned by Frankfurt landscape architect Robert Waldacker into a landscaped garden for the statue. The monument honours a popular local figure who spent summers in Königstein with his wife Adelheid Marie. After his death in 1905, both Protestant and Catholic clergy launched a fundraising campaign. The unveiling took place on 12 September 1910, attended by the Dowager Grand Duchess herself. Eberlein could not be present as he was in Buenos Aires for another unveiling. Visitors find a bronze figure of the duke standing on a stone pedestal in a small park. The setting offers views across the Taunus hills and down to the town. A plaque records the names of the donors who made the monument possible. The garden paths lead around the statue, framed by mature trees and shrubs.
