Schlosstheater Schwetzingen

Schlosstheater Schwetzingen is a court theatre built in 1753 as part of Schloss Schwetzingen in Baden-Württemberg. Designed by Nicolas de Pigage for Elector Karl Theodor, it blends rococo and neoclassical styles. The theatre originally opened with Ignaz Holzbauer’s opera *Il figlio delle selve* and later expanded its stage in 1762. It is Europe’s oldest surviving Rangtheater, a boxless tiered design. Mozart and his family attended a performance here in 1763. After Karl Theodor’s move to Munich, the theatre declined until its revival in the 20th century. The theatre’s significance lies in its historic premieres and modern festivals. Voltaire’s *L'orphelin de la Chine* premiered here in 1755, and Francesca Lebrun sang in Anton Schweitzer’s *Alceste* in 1775. Since 1952, it has hosted the Schwetzingen Festival, commissioning over 35 operas. Composers like Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, and Salvatore Sciarrino have premiered works here. The festival also revives Baroque operas, including Holzbauer’s original in 2003. It remains a key venue for both classical and contemporary music. Inside, the theatre retains its original stage machinery alongside modern updates. The auditorium features elegant tiers and refined acoustics, ideal for opera and drama. The Schwetzingen Festival brings performances of Baroque and classical works each year. The theatre also hosts the Mozartfest, an annual autumn festival. Surrounding Schloss Schwetzingen offers gardens and palace tours, enhancing the visit. Its elegant interior and historic legacy make it a cultural highlight.
