National Bowl

The National Bowl stands in south-central Milton Keynes, an open-air grass amphitheatre built on land once used as a clay pit. Its bowl shape, formed from raised sub-soil, holds up to 65,000 people without fixed seating. The site sits where Watling Street meets Chaffron Way, just north of Bletchley. Public transport is encouraged as on-site parking is limited. A two-kilometre walk from Milton Keynes Central station follows the Sustrans National Cycle Route 51. The Bowl has hosted major concerts since 1979, starting with Desmond Dekker and Geno Washington. Queen filmed their 1982 show here, released as *Queen on Fire – Live at the Bowl*. Michael Jackson played three nights to 60,000 fans each, though only one recording survives. Green Day’s 2005 performances were captured on *Bullet in a Bible*, and Linkin Park’s 2008 set appears on *Road to Revolution*. Swedish House Mafia chose the Bowl for their final UK show in 2012. Visitors find a grassy arena surrounded by gently sloping earth banks. The open-air setting gives concerts a natural feel, though weather can affect events. Temporary structures have appeared for some seasons, but the bowl remains essentially unchanged. Plans for sports facilities have been discussed but not yet realised. The site still serves as a major concert venue, drawing large crowds to Milton Keynes.
