Pfarrkirche Krummnußbaum

The Roman Catholic parish church of Krummnußbaum stands on a wide, park-like square in the centre of the market town of Krummnußbaum in Lower Austria. The church of the Immaculate Conception belongs to the deanery of Ybbs in the diocese of St Pölten. A chapel was built between 1908 and 1912 as a neo-Gothic choir with a small bell tower. In 1930 a nave with a rounded roof was added. The building became a parish branch in 1948 and gained its own gallery in 1953.
The present church dates from 1972–73 and was designed by architect Paul Pfaffenbichler. It is a broad, exposed-concrete structure on a complex polygonal plan with a detached bell tower to the north-east. The church combines a worship space and a multi-purpose hall under one roof, executed in raw concrete that has been described as brutalist neo-expressionism. The main front has a low porch leading to the hall, while a recessed porch on the east side gives access to the worship area.
Inside, the polygonal space can be divided by a folding screen. The worship area has a wooden ceiling and a gallery at the north-east end, lit by high slit windows and a central octagonal dome. The furnishings include a baroque crucifix, a statue of the Madonna from 1911, an 18th-century Anna Selbdritt painting and a 1948 baptismal font by sculptor Hans Scheibner. The 1979 bronze Stations of the Cross are the work of Josef Diethör.
