St Michael on the Mount Without stands on St Michael’s Hill in Bristol, a Grade II* listed building that was once a parish church. The 15th-century tower survives from the medieval structure, while the main body was rebuilt in the late 18th century in Georgian Gothic Revival style by Thomas Paty. The church occupies a prominent position on the hillside, forming a key landmark in the St Michael’s Hill and Christmas Steps Conservation Area. Its name reflects its location outside Bristol’s medieval walls, where it served as a place of worship for centuries. The site has been occupied by a church since 1147, making it one of only eight in Bristol to remain in its original position from the medieval period. The building is worth visiting for its layered history and architectural significance. The tower dates from the mid-1400s, while the rest of the church was rebuilt between 1775 and 1777 after earlier attempts to expand the structure failed. During the Second World War, the crypt served as an air-raid shelter for 400 people and later as a canteen for Allied forces. After closing in 1999, the church fell into disrepair and was badly damaged by arson in 2016. Following a change of ownership in 2019, it was restored and reopened in 2021 as a creative space and events venue. Visitors now find a transformed interior that blends historic features with modern use. The crypt has been converted for new purposes, while the main space hosts cultural events. The church’s position on the hillside offers views over the surrounding area, including the nearby University of Bristol. Its exterior retains the character of the Georgian rebuilding, with the medieval tower standing as a reminder of its long past.
