Sarre Anglo-Saxon cemetery

Sarre Anglo-Saxon cemetery lies in the rolling North Downs of Kent, a quiet field beside the old windmill at Sarre. Used for burials in the sixth and seventh centuries, it was one of the first places where Kent’s new Anglo-Saxon lords laid their dead. The site sits on a gentle slope above the Stour valley, where Romano-British farms once stood before the newcomers arrived. After centuries of ploughing, the cemetery was found only in 1843 when work began on the windmill. In 1863 John Brent led an excavation for the Kent Archaeological Society, probing graves with a metal rod and uncovering rich grave goods. The cemetery is important because it shows how Kent became a leading Anglo-Saxon kingdom. King Æthelberht, who ruled in the early seventh century, converted to Christianity under Augustine of Canterbury. This change brought new burial customs, visible in the grave finds at Sarre. Later work by D.R.J. Perkins in 1982 showed the cemetery was bigger than Brent had thought. Aerial photographs revealed unexcavated graves fifty metres from the original trench. Rescue digs in 1991, paid for by Southern Water, confirmed the site’s full extent. Visitors walk a grassy field marked by a low mound where Brent once dug. A single surviving gravestone stands near the windmill, carved with simple crosses. The soil is darker where graves were cut into the chalk, and fragments of bone and iron still appear after rain. The windmill’s sails turn slowly above, a reminder of the later farm life that followed the burials. From the site there are wide views over the Stour valley towards the sea. The only sounds are skylarks and the occasional farm vehicle on the lane below.
