Doktorschlössl

The Doktorschlössl stands in Salzburg’s Glas district, near the Glaser Straße. First recorded in 1116 as part of Nonnberg Abbey’s holdings, the property passed through many farming and civic owners before 17th-century physician Franz Mayr gave it his name. Mayr served Archbishop Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau and was married to Santino Solari’s daughter, the cathedral architect. The small castle has a cube-like shape with three full storeys. Four tiny hexagonal turrets mark its corners, added during a late-19th-century remodelling by Baron von Fuchs. A shingle-covered hip roof tops the building, while buttresses brace the ground floor. On the east side, three round-headed windows on each of the first two floors form an arcaded row. Inside, the building now houses a three-star hotel. Guests walk past the original buttresses and arched windows to reach modern rooms. The quiet Glas neighbourhood keeps the setting residential, yet the city centre remains close by.
